Animal Prevention in Toronto & the GTA

Prevention work is the most cost-effective stage of wildlife management. An exclusion performed before an animal enters — reinforcing the roof vents, sealing the soffit-fascia junction, installing L-footer mesh around the deck perimeter — costs a fraction of what reactive wildlife removal plus cleanup and repair costs after the fact.

Animal prevention in the GTA is largely a roofline and foundation problem. The GTA's housing stock skews heavily toward post-war bungalows and split-levels with aging aluminum soffit, deteriorating plastic roof vents, and fascia boards that have been patched and re-patched over decades. Each patch point and each original soffit joint is a potential raccoon or squirrel entry point as the structure ages. A proactive exclusion audit identifies these vulnerabilities before they become active entry points.

Prevention services also address the ground level: deck and shed perimeters where skunks and groundhogs burrow, basement window well covers where animals fall in and cannot escape, and garage door gap sealing where mice and rats enter at grade. The goal is a comprehensive perimeter assessment, not a single-point fix.

When to consider a prevention inspection

  • Your home is more than 15–20 years old and the roofline has not been recently inspected for wildlife entry points
  • A neighbour has had a recent raccoon or squirrel problem — animals follow established routes through a neighbourhood
  • You have an attached deck, shed, or garage with a gap at the foundation or an open perimeter
  • You hear occasional light movement in the attic at night but no sustained activity — an exploratory animal testing entry points
  • You have an ongoing mouse problem inside the home that resets every winter — mice are entering through gaps at grade
  • You have had a previous wildlife intrusion that was removed but the entry points were not professionally sealed

How we handle it

1

Full-perimeter inspection

We inspect the complete exterior of the property: roofline (vents, soffit edges, fascia, plumbing stacks, chimney cap), foundation level (gaps around pipes and wires, window wells, garage door threshold), and any outbuildings. We identify active entry points, damaged vulnerable areas, and sites at elevated risk.

2

Priority ranking and scope

Not every gap needs immediate attention. We rank the findings by risk — active entry points first, high-risk vulnerabilities second, low-risk monitoring items third — so you can make an informed decision about the scope of work.

3

Exclusion and hardening

Identified entry points and high-risk areas are sealed with appropriate materials: heavy-gauge galvanised screening for roof vents and soffit gaps, metal flashing at roofline junctions, buried L-footer mesh at deck and shed perimeters. All materials are rated for outdoor exposure and sized to resist the gnawing and prying force of the target species.

4

Documentation

We provide a written record of what was found, what was sealed, and what was noted as a monitoring item. This is the baseline for future inspections.

The 5-year warranty applies to all exclusion sealing work. If an animal enters through a point we sealed during the warranty period, the repair and any follow-up exclusion work is covered at no additional charge.

Animal Prevention — Frequently Asked Questions

What does prevention and exclusion actually cover?

We inspect the whole exterior for the gaps, vents, and roofline weak points animals use, then seal and reinforce them with heavy-gauge materials. The sealing work is backed by our 5-year warranty.

Is it worth doing before I have a problem?

Yes. Proofing entry points before an animal moves in is far cheaper and less disruptive than removal, repairs, and clean-up after the fact.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Durapest is licensed by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment and operates in line with Ontario Reg. 63/09. Our technicians are trained and insured for both residential and commercial work.

Do you offer a warranty?

Yes. Treatments come with a warranty, and any sealing or exclusion work is backed by our 5-year warranty. If covered pests return within the warranty period, we come back and re-treat at no extra cost.

How soon can you come out?

We offer same-day and next-day service across most of the GTA, from Oakville to Oshawa, with 24/7 dispatch for emergencies. Call us and we'll give you a straight answer on the next available slot for your area.
