Squirrel Removal in Toronto & the GTA

Grey squirrels are active year-round in the GTA and enter buildings in two main windows: early spring (February–March, females looking for a den before litter season) and late summer into autumn (juveniles establishing new territories). A squirrel can squeeze through a gap roughly 35 mm in diameter — the diameter of a standard roof-vent grommet — so vents and the junction between fascia and soffit are the most common entry points.

Inside an attic, squirrels gnaw on structural wood and wiring. Electrical wire damage from squirrel activity is a documented cause of house fires in Ontario. The gnawing is not destructive behaviour for its own sake — squirrels need to wear down continuously growing incisors, and they will use whatever material is available. A squirrel nest in an attic also draws attention from secondary predators.

Exclusion is the only lasting fix. Squirrels have strong site fidelity and will return to the same location repeatedly if the entry point is not sealed with metal — wood, plastic, and foam are all materials they can chew through.

Signs squirrels are inside your home

  • Rapid, scratching movement in the attic or walls — often heard in the morning (squirrels are diurnal, unlike raccoons)
  • Chewed entry holes at the roofline, often in the soffit-fascia corner or around roof vents, with fresh wood visible
  • Insulation material or leaf debris visible from the attic access hatch — squirrels build nests from whatever is at hand
  • Scattered bird seed, nuts, or food caches found in attic insulation
  • Gnaw marks on exposed attic wiring, particularly on the outer plastic jacket
  • Squirrel activity on your roof during the day, with repeated return visits to one specific spot

How we handle it

1

Inspection and entry point identification

We walk the roofline and inspect all potential entry points: soffit edges, roof vents, plumbing stack bases, and areas where recent or previous patch work is visible. Squirrels often use one primary entry point but probe for secondaries — all of them are mapped before any exclusion work starts.

2

One-way door installation

A one-way exclusion door is mounted over the primary entry point. Squirrels exit through it freely but cannot re-enter. We wait until we are confident the attic space is clear — particularly important in spring when young may be present — before removing the door and permanently sealing the opening.

3

Metal exclusion

All identified entry points are sealed with heavy-gauge galvanised screening and where needed, metal flashing. Squirrels can chew through wood filler, caulk, and foam — so metal is the only effective material. The sealing work carries a 5-year warranty.

4

Secondary vulnerability hardening

We identify roof vents, plumbing stacks, and other openings that are not yet entry points but are at risk. Reinforcing these proactively is far cheaper than addressing a second intrusion in a future season.

Ontario law and squirrel relocation

Grey squirrels are not classified as a specially protected species in Ontario, but the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act still governs how they may be handled. Trapped squirrels must be released within 1 km of the capture site. During spring litter season (roughly February through June), juvenile squirrels may still be in the nest and cannot be separated from the mother — this is another reason one-way exclusion, which allows animals to leave on their own timeline, is the preferred first method.

Squirrel exclusion is among the most straightforward wildlife services when the entry points are correctly identified and sealed with the right materials. The 5-year warranty reflects that confidence — if an animal re-enters through a sealed point during that period, the repair is covered.

Squirrel Removal — Frequently Asked Questions

How do squirrels get into a roof?

Usually through gaps at the roof edge, soffit, vents, or where the roofline meets a wall. They can squeeze through openings smaller than they look. We find every entry point during the inspection, not just the obvious one.

Will they come back after removal?

Not once the openings are sealed. We use one-way doors to get them out, then close the entry points with materials they can't chew through — backed by our 5-year sealing warranty.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Durapest is licensed by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment and operates in line with Ontario Reg. 63/09. Our technicians are trained and insured for both residential and commercial work.

Do you offer a warranty?

Yes. Treatments come with a warranty, and any sealing or exclusion work is backed by our 5-year warranty. If covered pests return within the warranty period, we come back and re-treat at no extra cost.

How soon can you come out?

We offer same-day and next-day service across most of the GTA, from Oakville to Oshawa, with 24/7 dispatch for emergencies. Call us and we'll give you a straight answer on the next available slot for your area.
