South Pickering — Bay Ridges, West Shore and the streets around Frenchman's Bay — backs onto wooded, watered green space, and that is where most of our Pickering wildlife work happens. Skunks den under decks, sheds and front porches; raccoons take the attic or the chimney. Older lakeside housing has more gaps around foundations and rooflines, and new construction on the north side near Seaton displaces animals that were already living on that land into freshly built homes.

For skunks the job is below grade: we confirm the den, fit a one-way door at the entrance so the animal leaves on its own, then screen the whole perimeter of the deck or shed down into the soil so nothing can dig back under. For raccoons it is the roofline — find every entry point, check for young in spring and early summer, fit a one-way door, and seal the opening with steel mesh once the animal is out. The sealing work carries a 5-year warranty.

We do not trap and relocate, and neither should anyone else in Ontario: captured wildlife must be released within 1 km of the capture site, within 24 hours, with the landowner's permission. Exclusion is the legal fix and the one that lasts. Pickering is about 30–40 minutes east of our Toronto base via the 401, so same-day is realistic for an urgent job and routine work is usually scheduled.
