Mouse Control in Toronto & the GTA

The house mouse (Mus musculus) is the most common indoor rodent in the GTA. Adults typically weigh 12–25 grams and can pass through a gap approximately 6–7 mm in diameter — roughly the size of a dime. They enter at grade level through gaps around plumbing, wiring, and conduit penetrations; under poorly fitted exterior doors; through foundation cracks; and through gaps in attached garage walls.

Mice are commensal animals — they live in close association with human habitation and rely on it for food and shelter, particularly through winter. In the GTA, mouse pressure peaks in late September through November as outdoor temperatures drop and animals seek warm interior spaces. Once inside, they establish trails quickly: a mouse detected in October has often been using the same entry point for weeks before it is noticed.

One mouse rarely means one mouse. Females produce 5–10 litters per year of 3–12 young, and a small founding population can grow to dozens within a few months in a warm, food-available environment. The realistic goal is to eliminate the current population and permanently close all entry points to prevent reinfestation.

Signs you have mice

  • Droppings along baseboards, behind the stove or refrigerator, in kitchen drawers, and in the back of lower cabinets — mouse droppings are 3–6 mm, rod-shaped with pointed ends
  • Gnaw marks on food packaging — cardboard, thin plastic, and foil are all penetrated easily
  • A faint ammonia-like smell in closed cabinets or behind appliances — mouse urine marks their trails continuously
  • Rustling sounds in walls or ceiling, typically at night when the house is quiet
  • Nesting material — shredded paper, fibreglass insulation, fabric — found in a drawer, appliance cavity, or behind stored items
  • A mouse seen in the daytime — daytime sighting usually indicates a larger population that has displaced some animals from the established shelter areas

How we handle it

1

Interior activity assessment

We identify where mice are active inside the home using droppings, grease marks, and gnaw evidence, and trace their likely travel paths from the entry points into the occupied living areas.

2

Snap trap deployment

For active infestations, snap traps are set along confirmed runways and near burrow or nesting sites. Snap traps are the fastest, most reliable population control method for mice. We use commercial-grade traps, set correctly, in positions accessible for monitoring and removal.

3

Entry point sealing

All identified entry points — pipe penetrations, wiring gaps, foundation cracks, door threshold gaps — are sealed with steel wool backed by appropriate fill, hardware cloth, or metal flashing, depending on the location. The 6–7 mm gap standard means even small gaps matter.

4

Population confirmation

We monitor trap activity across follow-up visits until traps go cold — no captures for several consecutive days — which confirms the interior population is eliminated. Bait stations may be added for persistent activity in wall voids.

In older GTA homes, mice often re-enter through the same routes every autumn because the entry points were never properly sealed. If you have had mice for more than one winter, a systematic entry point audit is likely the missing piece — trapping without sealing is an annual management problem, not a solution.

Mouse Control — Frequently Asked Questions

A few mice — is that really an infestation?

Mice breed quickly, so a couple seen now usually means more out of sight. We trap and remove, then seal the openings (a mouse fits through a gap the size of a dime) and clean up droppings and nesting.

Will sealing really keep them out?

Yes, when it's done thoroughly. We close every opening we find with materials mice can't chew through, backed by our 5-year sealing warranty.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Durapest is licensed by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment and operates in line with Ontario Reg. 63/09. Our technicians are trained and insured for both residential and commercial work.

Do you offer a warranty?

Yes. Treatments come with a warranty, and any sealing or exclusion work is backed by our 5-year warranty. If covered pests return within the warranty period, we come back and re-treat at no extra cost.

How soon can you come out?

We offer same-day and next-day service across most of the GTA, from Oakville to Oshawa, with 24/7 dispatch for emergencies. Call us and we'll give you a straight answer on the next available slot for your area.
